Commercial

I work full time but I'm still keen to explore options to learn new skills, make new connections and of course, earn a little extra money.  I am available for ESAS training, bird survey work, writing and giving talks and presentations.

ESAS training and surveys

I'm one of the only active qualified ESAS trainers in the UK. ESAS is the industry standard in non digital seabird surveys, and on my courses, trainees learn how to collect robust survey data to a standard compatible with a huge European dataset. My courses focus on ensuring candidates understand why the method specifies certain practices, meaning trainees not only leave knowing what to do, but understanding why that makes sense, as well. For more info, see here: http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-4568

I'm also available for ESAS survey work, and survey management and design consultancy. I'm a JNCC qualified MMO and have experience using PAMS.

Bird and Cetacean survey

In my spare time I have been involved with bird and cetacean surveys throughout the timeline of the Aberdeen Harbour Expansion Program. The work has comprised design and implementation of survey methods and regimes, carrying out seabird and cetacean surveys, habitat use surveys, dedicated behaviour surveys, schedule 1 surveys and breeding bird surveys, along with the associated reporting, and advising on chapters of the ES.

I am experienced in many terrestrial survey methods, especially VP surveys, from my time working for consultancies on terrestrial windfarm projects.

Writing

I've written many articles for Birdguides and some for the much loved 'Birding Frontiers' website. I've also contributed several birding itineraries to Birdwatch Magazine and had articles published in British Birds and Scottish Birds magazines.

Talking

I challenged myself to do more public speaking recently, as it has been an area I have been less comfortable in the past. Recent presentations have been on the birds of Sanday and Ouessant (SOC and RSPB), Advanced shorewatching skills (WDC Shorewatch), the cetacean of Orkney (Sanday development trust) and the development of volunteer based ESAS surveys (Calmac Marine Awareness Program partners).  I also helped develop and deliver the BTO's sound recording workshop in Thetford.
